The song is one of the surprisingly few that Bowie wrote using the cut-ups technique. Bowie is very much associated with this technique, although he ever only used it on a handful of songs, I think. The cut-ups for this song was done by randomizing bits of text on a computer.

Unless I am very much mistaking, the song was also covered in the 1997 action Scifi film Starship Troopers (as a live show [not by db] in the graduation party scene).
