with some weird logic I first posted this on a Rolling Stones-forum. It's painting called "Unikko" ("Poppy") by a Finnish painter Hugo Simberg (1873-1917). Roeg or Bowie must've seen this, what do you think?

It could be that the Low cover was inspired by this, but then again, it might not... could just be a conincidense. Is there any indication that Bowie was into this Finnish painter?

A Rolling Stone forum? That could be the key. There is a story about Bowie going to Mick Jagger's house and finding a painting which inspired him to contact the artist for 'Diamond Dogs' (I think.)

What's to stop him doing something similar with 'Low'?

The Low album cover is probably one of his best album covers. I see how this could be the inspiration. Maybe if it had "Unikko" in the Low font lol

to add some further wild speculation and conclusion jumping... After googling Hugo Simberg , I noticed there was another picture by Sunberg called The Wounded Angel - which immediately seemed to have a Bowie reference to me... The first thing that came to mind was Look Back In Anger... Just on a lyrical basis - that angel of death type thing, but now I've just seen a still from the video (look under bowie songs on Wordpress - it's under the article on Never Let Me Down/ Carlos Alomar) and the portrait of the angel behind bowie made the connection stronger to me anyway...
